Water Safety NSW

Water Safety Advisory Council (WSAC)

The WSAC is comprised of experts, both government and non-government in all fields of water safety; boating, fishing, swimming, surf, inland waterways, swimming pools, training, education, policy and legislation. 

Their task is to advise the Government on water safety matters; and ensure a strategic approach to water safety in NSW assists in reducing the number of drownings each year. 


The council membership is comprised of a senior representative from each of the following organisations:

  • NSW Department of Justice (Office of Emergency Management)
  • Department of Primary Industries (Recreational Fisheries Programs)
  • Transport for NSW (Maritime Management Centre)
  • NSW Police Force
  • NSW Department of Education
  • Department of Premier & Cabinet (Office of Sport)
  • Department of Premier & Cabinet (Office of Local Government)
  • Royal Life Saving Society Australia (NSW)
  • Surf Educators International
  • Surf Life Saving NSW
  • Australian Professional Ocean Lifeguard Association (APOLA)
  • Marine Rescue NSW
  • Local Government NSW.


The Office of Emergency Management in the NSW Department of Justice provides secretariat and policy support for the Council.
