Water Safety Forum

The Water Safety Forum is run by the Office of Emergency Management and brings together representatives from organisations that are involved in improving water safety for the NSW community.

Hosted by the Minister for Emergency Services Troy Grant, the 2018 Water Safety Forum was held on 2 May at NSW Parliament House.

The forum provided a valuable opportunity for water safety practitioners, rescue organisations and community groups to collectively review the latest data and share insights and ideas on how to reduce the number of drowning deaths in NSW.

Key themes and identified actions from the forum are summarised in the 2018 Water Safety Forum communique (pdf).

NSW Summer Drowning Report 2017/18

The NSW Government commissioned Royal Life Saving Society NSW to provide an analysis of the drowning deaths over summer 2017/18. The key findings of the report were presented at the Water Safety Forum.

Royal's report identified priority areas which were addressed via forum discussions and presentations, including:

  • changing risk taking behaviour around the water;
  • encouraging parents to actively supervise young children in, on and around the water;
  • reducing drowning risk at unpatrolled locations;
  • CALD communities and international visitors.
